Flamed Mango Aracama Guitar 2021

Description

This 2021 Mario Aracama classical guitar pairs a European spruce top with flamed mango from Indonesia for the back and sides – our first Aracama in this wood – built near Granada, Spain.

Flamed Mango from Indonesia

This time Mario combined European spruce for the soundboard with a beautiful set of flamed mango from Indonesia for the back and sides – our first from him with this gorgeous wood combination. The fingerboard is African rosewood and the neck cedar.

Single, Slightly Thicker Sides

Unlike previous guitars he's built for us, this guitar does not have doubled sides; it uses single but slightly thicker sides instead to achieve similar results in terms of sustain and clarity. This gives the guitar a much more lightweight feel, which improves responsiveness and ease of play, particularly for the right hand.

Sound

A real pleasure to play – a friendly, immediate response without harshness, and a velvety, full body of sound. The colors move with every small change of the right hand. Basses are deep and trebles thick and rich, with great clarity between all voices. Very comfortable for both hands, and full of Spanish character. The Grigoryan Brothers recorded a duet on two Aracamas, this one included (see videos).

Background

Mario Aracama: From London to Granada

Mario Aracama became captivated with the guitar at an early age and, while living in England, decided to become a luthier, attending Guildhall University in London. There he graduated in Musical Instrument Technology, specializing in traditional classical and flamenco guitars under the tutelage of David Whiteman. In 2003 he relocated to Granada, Spain, where he learned further from Antonio Marín Montero.

The Granada School and the Torres Tradition

In the following years Mario enjoyed a fruitful exchange of ideas with his friends Michael Ritchie and Jose Vigil, which has also influenced his style. True to the Granada aesthetic, Mario builds a light and vibrant instrument with lightly braced tops, based in the great Spanish tradition in the line of Torres. Every guitar built by Mario features a different, original – but very traditional and tasteful – design.
